Creative Reflection: The Case of “San Clemente”
During the live meeting, composer Pierre Jodlowski will share the process of creating the interdisciplinary work “San Clemente” centered on the island of San Clemente in the Gulf of Venice: once home to one of Italy’s largest psychiatric hospitals, it has become a symbol of the psychiatric crisis and the isolation of patients. The work reflects the historical memory of this place and the paradox of today – the former hospital is now a luxury hotel that conceals its past.
The project is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach, bringing together documentary film, music, poetry, choreography, and scenography. Drawing on Raymond Depardon’s film “San Clemente” and the writings of the Italian poet Alda Merini, the different media function as equal layers of narration: the image constructs documentary memory, the body and movement convey experiences of trauma and isolation, while music and voice create a space for emotional and poetic reflection. Through stage action and sonic dramaturgy, the work seeks to restore memory to those who were isolated from society for many years, while simultaneously revealing how the contemporary luxury industry erases the complex histories of historical sites.
The presentation will be followed by an open discussion and conversation with the composer.
We also invite you to open rehearsals-laboratory, during which a new stage work by Pierre Jodlowski is being created, in collaboration with LMTA PARC, pianist Julija Bagdonavičiūtė, and the visual theater “Kosmos Theatre”.
Open rehearsals will take place on 5, 6, and 7 June, from 16:00 to 20:00.
