LMTA lecturers were convened to the first international “Spring School for Doctoral Supervisors”

On 26–28 March 2025, the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre organised the first international “Spring School for Doctoral Supervisors” at Panemunė Castle, the aim of which was to discuss the challenges facing doctoral students and their supervisors conducting artistic research, and to learn from good practices. In order to strengthen international cooperation, the event brought together current and future doctoral supervisors, researchers and practitioners, not only from the LMTA, but also from Ireland, Slovakia and Belgium. This event is also part of the PARC project, partly funded by the Research Council of Lithuania.

During the seminars and workshops, the methods of artistic research, the role of artistic practice in creating knowledge, and effective leadership strategies were explored. Guest foreign lecturers – Prof. Dr. Robin Andrew Nelson (UK), Prof. Dr. Rachel Garfield (UK) and Prof. Dr. Claus Peder Pedersen (Denmark) – shared their experience and insights into the specifics of artistic research. Participants had the opportunity to participate in group discussions, which examined the most common obstacles and suggested possible practical strategies for solving them.

At the end of the three-day camp, the lecturers stated that the event not only provided valuable knowledge, but also created a unique opportunity to share their experiences and discuss. According to the participants, such initiatives are necessary to improve the practice of artistic research and doctoral supervision both in Lithuania and abroad.

Ramunė Balevičiūtė, Vice-Rector for Arts and Science at the Latvian Academy of Arts, said she hopes that the “Spring School for Doctoral Supervisors” will become a significant impetus in expanding the understanding of artistic research and thus contributing to improving the quality of art doctoral studies. “Accompanying a doctoral student on his or her path of artistic research is a complex process that requires much more than just scientific and artistic competencies. I believe that the knowledge and experiences gained at the spring school will encourage doctoral students to embark on a journey of artistic research with greater courage” – said Ramunė Balevičiūtė.
